The Inca Trail

Importance:
This trail was used in ancient times as a communications and trade route between the highlands, and the medium and lower valleys. It is still in use today by the inhabitants of Calderillas Valley as it is their only access route.

The trail is paved in stone and in most areas is in a good state of preservation. It is a characteristic example of the Incaic paths: it has water drainage troughs, platforms, and structural walls formed of great slabs of rocks.

Description of trail:
Starting in the highlands of Tajzara, the trail crosses the Sama range (Cordillera de Sama) and continues descending in zig zag toward the village of Calderillas. From there the trail crosses the Calderilla River's ravine and then abruptly descends to the village of Pinos in a trail carved from the steep mountain sides.

The trail can be walked in one intense 8 hour segment, or can be split in two days by spending one night in Calderillas. It can be steep and slippery at times and it is recommended that only experienced hikers attempt it in one day. Transportation to the trail head and from the trail end at Pinos to Tarija must be arranged.

Without a doubt the trail is one of the reserve's main attractions for both its scenic beauty and excellent state of preservation.
